Scholarship Program

In 1999, LLI/NOVA established a Student Scholarship Program at the Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) Annandale Campus to give financial help to outstanding students.  Besides financially supporting students, the scholarships show LLI/NOVA’s appreciation for the support provided by the college to LLI/NOVA.

LLI/NOVA offers different types of scholarships – leadership scholarships and academic scholarships.  Leadership Scholarships are given to outstanding student leaders in recognition of their contributions in fostering unity among a diverse, multicultural student body and in providing volunteer community service.  The “Knox Singleton Leadership Scholarship” is a special award for exceptionally qualified students with superior leadership motivation, skill, activity, and results.  The names of past winners of the Knox Singleton Leadership Scholarship are engraved on a plaque that hangs outside the Provost’s conference room in the CFH building (Founders Hall) on the NOVA-Annandale campus.  Academic Scholarships are awarded to students demonstrating both academic merit and financial need.  LLI/NOVA also offers a special Academic and Need Scholarship, known as the “Lorin Goodrich Academic Scholarship,” to a student who demonstrates unusual academic achievement as evidenced by grades.

LLI/NOVA members can volunteer for the LLI/NOVA Scholarship Committee.  The Committee runs fundraising for the scholarships, develops written materials and publicity about the scholarships, coordinates the program with NOVA, and makes decisions concerning the size, number, and selection criteria for scholarship awards.

The scholarship program is implemented in partnership with the NVCC Educational Foundation, a non-profit partner of Virginia’s community colleges that has been supporting NOVA students for 40 years.

The LLI/NOVA scholarship committee raises funds for the scholarships from LLI members.  The committee determines the qualifications of scholarship recipients, the funding level and number of scholarships, and the objectives of the scholarships.  In coordination with the Foundation, the NOVA Office of Financial Aid publicizes the scholarships, receives hundreds of applications, and screens interested students using a standardized online application.  Selection is made by a scholarship review committee using LLI/NOVA’s selection criteria.  LLI/NOVA members can meet with recipients following award of the scholarships if they and the recipients wish.

Scholarships are awarded to NOVA/Annandale students following their first year.  Scholarship funds are deposited in recipients’ college accounts and can be used for books and tuition during their second year at NOVA.

Scholarship Donation and Matching Grant

Every year, LLI/NOVA members and friends have donated generously to the scholarship program. In 2023, as an added incentive, we had a matching grant of $5,000 in effect.

Donations are welcomed at any time. For the 2024 scholarships, donations should be received before October 14, 2024. Donations are tax deductible.
